The Fifth Exhibition of Gifts Received by the Asia and Pacific Museum (gifts 2000–2025)
The Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw is much indebted to its donors. It was established in 1973 on the basis of an extensive private collection of Indonesian arts and crafts owned by Mr. Andrzej Wawrzyniak and gifted to the Polish state. Since then, the Museum has enjoyed the kindness and support of many benefactors. Both those who transferred the ownership of large collections and those who gave a single object have greatly contributed to the expansion of the Museum’s resources. Today, gifts constitute about one third of the collection, which itself numbers nearly 22,000 items.
The Museum has striven to honour its benefactors by organizing four exhibitions of their gifts thus far. Thus the exhibition’s title refers to the tradition of four previous exhibitions of gifts held at the Asia and Pacific Museum in 1978, 1982, 1988, and 2000.
The current display presents a selection of items received in 2000–2025—which amounts to almost half of the Museum’s entire history. In this period, we accepted contributions from over 300 donors, and began organizing a collection of photographs from another 100 donors.
The exhibition is divided into great geographical and cultural regions of origin, each section including four overarching categories of gifts: those donated by researchers and museum experts, diplomats, collectors and admirers of Asia. The idea is to allow visitors to compare the nature of the gifts as it relates to the donors’ interests and tastes.
