Bangladesh is a small and young country in South Asia that shares borders with India and Myanmar. It is influenced by a mixture of Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and more local beliefs. In the past, it was famous for its magnificent fabrics and the most delicate muslin in the world. Today, it is more often in the news when a strong tropical cyclone hits the Bay of Bengal.

The contemporary painting collection of the Embassy of Bangladesh in Warsaw has given rise to the exhibition. By presenting the current art scene, we relay the story of a country where various aspects of local customs and cultures have mixed with those of invading populations. The exhibition is structured around two pillars of Bangladeshi culture – river and poetry – which are also referenced in the title of the exhibition Nodir kule kule – With the stream. It is a quote from a song by the most famous Bengali poet, Rabindranath Tagore, which later became the national anthem.

The exhibition will also present items of local arts and crafts as well as a valuable collection of prints from the Museum that will be shown in instalments. Each part will be on show for only two weeks.
