Aleksander Kobzdej (1920-1972)
Old Peasant Woman from Vietnam, 1953
Drawing, ink on paper.
At the beginning of his artistic career, Aleksander Kobzdej adhered to socialist realism but in later years he turned decisively to abstraction. At the end of 1953 and the beginning of 1954, with an official group of Polish painters and writers, he visited China and Vietnam. The latter country at that time had been in war with France. The drawings he brought back from this journey - mainly portraits and landscapes - being a diary of artistic impressions, at the same time could be considered a historic document of those years. Fortunately, the artist's diary from Vietnamese journey have been also preserved.
