THE ELEPHANT - BOX FOR WEDDING GIFTS

Dhokra bronze, lost wax casting.
India, Orissa, 70-ties of the 20th cent.
Dhokra folk bronzes are still smelting by wandering craftsmen from the Eastern states if India. Their openwork surface reminds basket-work. The large elephant on wheels, decorated with pictures of gods of prosperity: Vishnu and Lakshmi, was used as a box for wedding gifts.
