FELT RUG NAMAD

Sheep wool, felt, embroidery.
Afghanistan, Uzbeks, 2nd half of the 20th cent.
Felt is a fabric produced by Turkish and Mongolian nomads living around the regions of Central Asia. It is used to cover yurts, to make carpets, horsecloths, dresses and headdresses. Felt is durable, water and wind resistant and very light, i.e. easy to transport from place to place. It can be embroidered and ornamented in different ways. Felt fabrics have also been adapted by some of the settled communities, among them by Uzbeks and Turks.
